As the physical doors of her infrared studio closed for the final time in COVID, a new Breedlove Beauty Lab was born. “I loved the space that I created in Santa Monica, but I realized I was meant to expand beyond the four walls of BBL. This new approach allows me to do just that.”
“Not only that, I fell in love with design at age seven,” Mary further explained. “My family worked with interior designer Jean Bugay. She made such a huge impression on me that I went to work for her at age 15.” In college, Mary secured a sought-after position with W Magazine in NYC, then returned to design, landing a job with the famed Gallinger Trauner Designs in Jackson, WY. Eventually her heart shifted and she moved away from both those lanes pursuing the holistic health and movement arenas in Los Angeles.
Breedlove Beauty Lab today brings Mary back to her roots, and ties her more directly to her present as both a brand pioneer in the wellness space and a holistic designer. Her philosophy puts as much weight on the intention, as the interiors of the brand.
“When I look back on my career, there’s a consistent overlap. Wellness, fitness, editorial, design. They seem different, but they aren’t. They all trade in energies, and all share one common theme: an elevated client experience. With Breedlove Beauty Lab, I am combining all of that and taking it further by creating destination experiences that drive community and build a cult-like status within the groups they are reaching.”
Mary currently lives in Santa Monica, California with her dog Bear and divides her time between her second home of Jackson Hole.
As a creative entrepreneur, Mary Breedlove’s career has unfolded with a holistic artistry and creative inertia all its own. Her diverse path has had three central themes: design, wellness, and editorial, all of which have merged into her current endeavor, Breedlove Beauty Lab.
With a proven track record building brands in the wellness space, Mary first founded her highly-sought-after Breedlove Pilates on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, CA in 2010. Nine years later, she expanded her vision, creating a fully developed infrared sauna studio concept called Breedlove Beauty Lab, opening its doors in 2019.
Within months of opening, BBL racked up more than a thousand 5-star reviews for the remarkable studio Mary built. “I believe my success with the studio incarnation of BBL was the result of a special balance I struck between our design, wellness approach, and curated client experience,” said Mary.
With a growing, regular, customer base and attention-grabbing media coverage, BBL was poised to be a fixture on the LA wellness landscape for decades to come, but with COVID shutdowns and a near-whiplash halt to businesses in LA, Mary had to make the difficult decision to close the business permanently. In that process, she made a discovery: “I loved the challenge of concepting and launching BBL. It hit all my buttons… an intuitive design, franchise models, branding strategies, and securing state-of-the-art, ground-breaking equipment…but, I missed my roots of interior design and working on a project basis.”
With Los Angeles under complete lockdown, Mary began to break ground on a new way to work, one that would have her designing brands, businesses, and their interiors, primarily for her clients in the holistic and wellness space.
